Designs&Words

Identity, interface, and the words that hold them together.

Built, not decorated.

Every machine you just scrolled past — the loader, the containers, the truck, the road under them — is generated in code. Nothing was downloaded, nothing was stock. We work the same way on everything else: from the structure up, until the thing itself is the argument.

Services

  1. 01

    Brand strategy & naming

Positioning, architecture and language a brand can keep using once we have gone.

  2. 02

    Identity systems

Marks, type, colour and the rules that stop them falling apart at scale.

  3. 03

    Art direction

Photography, illustration and 3D, directed so every asset agrees with the last.

  4. 04

    Web & product design

Interfaces designed and built in one pass, so nothing is lost in handover.

  5. 05

    Motion & real-time 3D

Product scenes and pages like this one, modelled and animated entirely in code.

  6. 06

    Copy & content

The words on the page, written to the same brief as the thing they sit on.

How we work

  1. 01

    Listen

The problem in your words first, before anyone reaches for a template.

  2. 02

    Frame

Scope, structure and success agreed in writing, before anything is drawn.

  3. 03

    Build

Design and code advance together, reviewed in the real medium every week.

  4. 04

    Hand over

Files, systems and documentation you can run without calling us back.

01

Small on purpose

Two or three people on a job, all of them senior. No layer of account management between you and the work.

02

Code is a design tool

We prototype in the medium the thing will live in, so what you approve is what ships — not a picture of it.

03

We write it too

Naming, interface copy, the words in the footer. Design and language leave the studio together.

04

Built to be left

Systems documented well enough that your team can run them long after the invoice has cleared.

05

Still here?

Then you have scrolled further than most. That is usually how the good ones start.

06

Then it ships

Files, systems, documentation and the words that go with them — handed over finished, not handed over soon.

07

No handover cliff

You get the source, the components and the reasoning behind both. Nothing is kept back as leverage.

08

Small enough to answer

One inbox and two or three people. You will always know who is doing the work, because you will be talking to them.

09

Where we work

Remote by default, on your hours when it matters. Timezones have never been the difficult part of a project.

10

Send us the brief

About

We are a studio of makers, not a studio of decks.

Designs&Words was set up around one stubborn idea: that the people who decide what a thing should be ought to be the people who build it. Strategy that never meets a real constraint turns into wishful thinking, and craft with no argument behind it turns into decoration. We keep the two in the same room, usually in the same person.

In practice that means short teams, work reviewed in the medium it will live in, and a preference for shipping something honest over presenting something flattering. The sequence you have just scrolled through is the studio's own argument, made the way we make everything else — from the structure up, in code, until the thing itself is the case study.

The team

Small, senior, and on the work.

Named profiles and photographs drop in here — this section is built and waiting for them.
